This painting uses the technique of "pentimento", a process in which paint (and in this case other media) are applied to a surface, then a light gesso wash is applied over that layer. When the gesso dries, another layer of drawing/paint/colored pencils, chalk is applied and many layers are built, creating transparency and playing with the hierarchy of the images. Many of my pentimento paintings have 20-30 layers built up, which lends depth and subtlety to the overall composition.
